Commercial renovation from retail to restaurant

The transformation of a carpet store into a distinctive American bistro in the heart of Jackson Heights, Queens, marked the inaugural venture for a trio of local friends. Seeking to cultivate an atmosphere grounded in neighborhood vernacular within budget constraints, the owners undertook a complete gut renovation.

Strategically placed windows in the previously opaque side wall usher in natural light throughout the day and offer a captivating view of the Manhattan skyline during sunset. The perimeter walls were stripped to reveal the mixed masonry construction, introducing texture and pattern to the expansive interior.

This comprehensive renovation encompassed new floors, walls, ceilings, and the installation of a full-scale industrial kitchen, complete with a pizza oven and a robust steel structure to support its considerable weight. Artist Dan Funderburgh designed custom wallpaper adorned with local landmarks and themes unique to Jackson Heights and Queens. The addition of custom-made brown leather booths and a reclaimed wood bar top fosters an atmosphere of comfort and camaraderie. A basement party room provides a venue for family gatherings, birthdays, and community events. Embracing the b’rough's spirit of eclecticism, each of the four bathrooms is uniquely finished, grounding the design in Queens' diverse character.
